Lagos strengthens community safety, resident participation in public housing estates

The Lagos State Government has reiterated that active resident participation is vital to sustaining safe, secure and well-managed public housing schemes across the state.

The commitment was reaffirmed by the Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, during a stakeholder engagement and public enlightenment programme held at the LagosHOMS Housing Estate, Amuwo Odofin, targeting residents within the Badagry Division.

Representing the Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing,  Abdulhafis Gbolahan Toriola, emphasized that while the government continues to heavily invest in housing infrastructure and estate maintenance, the long-term survival of these estates depends on the people living in them.

“The sustainability of Government-owned housing estates is a shared responsibility,” Toriola stated. “Beyond the provision of infrastructure, residents must actively contribute to the upkeep of their environment and support measures aimed at preserving public assets.”

He further urged residents to step up their civic duties by protecting shared infrastructure, complying with estate regulations, and fostering peaceful coexistence.

A key highlight of the engagement was the call for residents to prioritize participation in the recently reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

To equip residents with the tools for better estate management, the enlightenment programme covered several critical areas of community living, including, fire safety and emergency preparedness,  Infrastructure protection and environmental sanitation, consumer rights and insurance coverage, domestic violence prevention

The forum also served as an interactive platform for residents to voice pressing concerns regarding power supply, security, water systems and recreational facilities. Ministry officials responded by outlining ongoing and upcoming interventions designed to upgrade living conditions across state-owned estates.

Responding to the government’s call to action, the Chairman of the LagosHOMS Amuwo Odofin Residents Association, Mr. Monsuru Tiamiyu, lauded the initiative.

He described the engagement as a valuable platform that has successfully bridged the communication gap between the government and estate residents.

Tiamiyu expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its dedication to improving welfare standards and assured the Ministry of the residents’ unwavering support.

He pledged that the community would actively work to protect shared assets and champion environmental sanitation.

Moving forward, the Ministry of Housing promised to sustain these public enlightenment programmes across the state to ensure responsible community living and effective estate management. (edited)
