The immediate past Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai, on Wednesday appeared before two separate courts in Kaduna over allegations bordering on abuse of office, money laundering and corruption, with both matters adjourned for further proceedings.
At the Federal High Court, el-Rufai was arraigned alongside his former Special Adviser, Jimi Lawal, and five corporate entities on an amended 11-count charge.
Shortly after, el-Rufai also appeared before the Kaduna State High Court for the continuation of hearing in another case filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
At the earlier court, el-Rufai pleaded not guilty to Count One of the charge. The prosecution listed el-Rufai, Lawal and the five corporate entities as defendants in the matter, alleging various offences connected with abuse of office and financial impropriety.
When the case came up before Justice Hauwa’u Buhari, counsel to el-Rufai and Lawal informed the court that separate bail applications had been filed on behalf of their clients.
Following arguments by both the prosecution and defence on the bail applications, Justice Buhari adjourned the matter until July 1, 2026, for ruling on the applications.
Although journalists were denied access to the courtroom, sources familiar with the proceedings disclosed that both parties vigorously argued their positions before the court reserved its decision.
A source at the court said, “The prosecution and defence presented their arguments, particularly on the bail applications, after which the court fixed July 1 for ruling.”
The case at the Kaduna State High Court before Justice Darius Khobo borders on allegations of abuse of office and money laundering allegedly committed during el-Rufai’s tenure as governor.
After proceedings, Justice Khobo adjourned the matter until June 29, 2026, for continuation of hearing on the case.
