2027: Adebayo unveils plans to tackle poverty, unemployment

Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2023 general elections, Adewole Adebayo

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2027 general election, Adewole Adebayo, has outlined his plans for Nigeria, pledging to address poverty, unemployment, insecurity and infrastructure deficits through policies focused on social investment, economic growth and accountable governance.

Adebayo, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the SDP, said Nigeria’s challenges were largely the result of leadership failures rather than a lack of resources.

Speaking on his vision for the country, the lawyer and entrepreneur said Nigeria possesses sufficient human and natural resources to improve the living conditions of its citizens if properly managed.

“The environment makes you a liar when you say you are poor,” he said, attributing widespread poverty to poor governance rather than scarcity of resources.

The Ondo State-born politician said his commitment to social democracy dates back to 1991 when he joined the SDP as a student after studying the party’s manifesto and its focus on education, healthcare, housing and infrastructure.

Adebayo, who practises law in Nigeria and the United States, said his professional experience spans international investment law across Africa, Europe, America and Australia.

He also served as a commissioner on the United Nations and ECOWAS-backed Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Liberia in 2006.

He said his experience in business and philanthropy has further shaped his approach to governance. Adebayo is the founder of KAFTAN TV, a broadcast network with operations in Ondo, Lagos, Abuja and Washington, D.C.

According to him, the organisation has trained more than 1,000 National Youth Service Corps members and retained over 100 as employees.

He also said he currently sponsors about 2,000 students in tertiary institutions within and outside Nigeria and has supported women through various empowerment initiatives.

Adebayo stated that a major focus of his administration would be the implementation of Chapter Two of the Constitution, particularly provisions relating to the welfare and security of citizens.

He criticised what he described as misplaced national priorities and pledged to direct greater public investment towards education, healthcare, housing and security.

The SDP candidate said his administration would pursue full employment as a key economic objective, with a target of creating 30 million jobs through agriculture, manufacturing, digital innovation and enterprise development.

“Once you have full employment, the rest of your problems can be dealt with,” he said.

Adebayo outlined a five-point governance strategy centred on accountable government, increased productivity, transparent market rules, judicial independence and job creation.

He also described Nigeria’s infrastructure gap as an opportunity for investment and called on local and international investors to participate in the development of roads, energy systems, digital infrastructure and industrial facilities.

According to him, adherence to the rule of law, transparent business regulations and independent institutions would strengthen investor confidence and support economic growth.

On youth development, Adebayo said his plans include enrolling 20 million out-of-school children, establishing entrepreneurship incubation centres, modernising agriculture, promoting sports development and training five million young Nigerians in environmental sustainability and green technology.

He stressed the importance of education, healthcare, nutrition and early childhood learning in national development, saying investments in human capital would remain a priority under his administration.

The SDP flagbearer also pledged to expand economic opportunities for women through initiatives aimed at supporting entrepreneurship across the continent.

Adebayo expressed confidence that Nigeria’s challenges could be addressed through leadership, social investment and economic reforms.

“We have clear systemic issues which few in positions of authority are willing to fix. Nigerians deserve an alternative, effective solution,” he said.

He said his campaign would focus on presenting policies aimed at promoting inclusive growth, accountability and national development ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
