The Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday restored bail to human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of N200 million with two sureties, who must be acceptable to the court.
Reacting to the bail conditions, Sowore has insisted that no force on earth would stop revolution in Nigeria. Speaking shortly after he was granted bail, Sowore added: “We warned them, but they didn’t listen.
“I was granted N200 million bail. They have always been after my passport. When we get to that bridge, we will cross it.”
Justice Muhammad Umar, who presided in the case, said one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the other must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The court also directed Sowore to deposit his international passport with the court registrar pending the determination of the case. The ruling followed Sowore’s fresh bail application after his earlier bail was revoked by the court over his absence from a court proceeding. Afterwards, the court adjourned the trial till July 6.
Justice Umar had also issued a bench warrant for his arrest after the activist failed to appear in court for the continuation of his trial. Sowore later returned to court and challenged the order, leading to the hearing of his application for the restoration of bail.
Meanwhile, the human rights activist was returned to the Kuje Correctional Centre pending when he perfects his bail conditions. The court had earlier remanded him to the same facility pending the determination of the application.
The activist is facing charges bordering on alleged cybercrime, as filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), over his comment that President Bola Tinubu is “a criminal”.
