The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in Lagos State by two weeks, shifting the closing date from July 10 to July 26, 2026, to enable more eligible residents to register ahead of future elections.
The commission in a statement on Monday by the Head of Voter Education and Publicity, INEC Lagos State, Taiwo Gbadegesin, stated that the extension is aimed at providing additional opportunities for eligible residents who are yet to register to be included in the National Register of Voters.
The CVR exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, will now conclude on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
As part of efforts to improve access to voter registration, INEC also announced the introduction of a self-service online registration platform for eligible first-time voters.
The commission said the online registration option will become operational from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, allowing prospective registrants to complete the registration process using their personal devices through the commission’s dedicated Continuous Voter Registration portal.
According to the commission, the platform features a user-friendly, step-by-step registration process and incorporates identity verification and biometric validation to protect the integrity of the National Register of Voters.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Lagos State, Prof. Ayobami Salami, urged eligible residents who have yet to register as voters to take advantage of both the extension of the registration exercise and the newly introduced online registration platform.
INEC said the measures form part of its commitment to expanding voter access while ensuring the credibility of the voter registration process ahead of future elections.
He said: “To further improve accessibility, the Commission is introducing a self-service online registration option for eligible first-time voters. Beginning Wednesday, 8th July 2026, prospective registrants can complete their registration using their personal devices through the Commission’s dedicated CVR portal.
“The platform provides a user-friendly, step-by-step guide and incorporates robust identity verification and biometric validation to safeguard the integrity of the National Register of Voters.”
