The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the Delta State House of Assembly over its declaration of the seat of Collins Egbetamah as vacant, describing the decision as unconstitutional, politically motivated and an assault on democratic principles.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the party alleged that Egbetamah had become the target of political persecution after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joining the NDC on April 30, 2026.
According to the party, the lawmaker was elected on the APC platform and remained a minority member of the Delta Assembly until Governor SherGovernor Sheriff Oborevwori and several legislators defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, altering the political composition of the House.
The NDC argued that the declaration of Egbetamah’s seat as vacant was inconsistent with constitutional provisions governing legislative defections and accused the Assembly of using its powers to intimidate opposition voices.
The party maintained that the action undermines democratic representation and called for an immediate reversal of the decision, insisting that the mandate given to the lawmaker by his constituents should be respected.
The development adds a new dimension to the growing political realignments in Delta State following the wave of defections that has reshaped the state’s political landscape.
The Delta State House of Assembly has yet to publicly respond to the NDC’s allegations.
