Nigerian comedian and content creator, ThaEdoBoy, has revealed how he turned his social media presence from a hobby into a business after earning his first payment of N20,000 from a sponsored content in 2019.
The creator, whose real name is Okojie Bobby Oseyi, said the payment changed his perspective about opportunities available in the digital space and showed him that content creation could become a sustainable career.
“I knew that since I was able to get N20,000, a day would come that I could earn N2 million or more,” he said.
ThaEdoBoy, who studied Statistics at the University of Benin, said his journey into monetised content started with a music promotion post when he had about 10,000 followers on Instagram.
He said receiving that N20,000 payment became a turning point because it helped him see social media beyond entertainment and as a platform with business potential.
“That was when I understood that what I was doing could actually become a business. I started looking at content creation differently,” he said.
Known for his comedy and football-related content, ThaEdoBoy has built a strong digital audience, including over five million followers on TikTok, while developing a niche around football banter and entertainment.
He said creators need to focus on building a loyal audience and developing their unique identity rather than simply chasing every online trend.
On brand partnerships, he said some companies place too much focus on follower numbers and fail to consider whether a creator’s content and audience align with their campaign goals. “The biggest mistake brands make is that sometimes they don’t bother to even check the kind of content a creator does, if he or she matches the audience they want. Instead, they just look at the number of followers,” he said.
He added that he researches brands before accepting partnerships because credibility and audience trust are important parts of his digital brand.
Looking ahead, he said he plans to expand beyond content creation into business and sports-related ventures while continuing to grow his influence online.
“In the next five years, I see myself doing bigger things, not just as a content creator but also in business and sports,” he said.
