MUSWEN commends rescue of abducted Oyo pupils, urges stronger protection for schools

Released Oyo pupils

The Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) has praised the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government and security agencies for the successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing the operation as a major relief for the affected families and a sign that coordinated security efforts can produce results.

In a statement issued on Friday night and signed by its President, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, and Executive Secretary, Prof. Wole Abbas, the organisation said the rescue was a welcome development at a time when Nigerians remain deeply concerned about attacks on schools and the growing threat of kidnapping across the country.

MUSWEN said the intelligence-led operation, which resulted in the safe return of the victims, demonstrated the commitment and capability of the nation’s security forces when properly coordinated and adequately supported.

The group particularly commended the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other collaborating agencies for what it described as their professionalism, bravery and dedication throughout the operation.

According to the statement, the rescue also led to the neutralisation or arrest of several kidnappers, sending a strong message that criminal elements involved in attacks on schools and innocent citizens would not be allowed to operate with impunity.

MUSWEN expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for providing the leadership and support that made the operation possible. It also commended the Oyo State Government under Governor Seyi Makinde for its collaboration with security agencies and sustained efforts during the difficult period.

The organisation noted that the safe return of the pupils and teachers had brought relief not only to their families and communities, but also to Nigerians who had followed the incident with concern and anxiety.

While celebrating the successful rescue, MUSWEN mourned the death of teacher Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly killed while in captivity. The group described his death as a painful reminder of the human cost of insecurity and extended its condolences to his family and loved ones.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and all those affected by this traumatic ordeal,” the statement said.

MUSWEN urged the government to ensure that the rescued victims receive comprehensive medical care, psychosocial support and any other assistance necessary for their full recovery and reintegration into normal life.

The organisation stressed that the trauma experienced by victims of abduction should not be overlooked and called for sustained support to help them overcome the psychological and emotional effects of the ordeal.

It further stated that the successful rescue operation should serve as a warning to kidnappers, bandits and other criminal groups that Nigeria would not tolerate attacks on innocent citizens, especially children and educators.

MUSWEN called on the Federal and State Governments to build on the momentum of the rescue by strengthening security around schools, improving intelligence gathering and enhancing collaboration among security agencies.

The group also urged authorities to address the root causes of insecurity in the South-West and across the country, including poverty, unemployment, weak community security structures and the activities of organised criminal networks.

According to MUSWEN, protecting schools and educational institutions must remain a national priority, as attacks on pupils and teachers threaten not only lives but also the future of education and national development.

The organisation appealed to parents, teachers, community leaders and all Nigerians to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by providing credible information that could help prevent future attacks.

MUSWEN reaffirmed its commitment to partnering with relevant stakeholders in promoting peace, unity and the protection of lives in South West Nigeria and across the country.

The group expressed hope that the successful rescue would encourage renewed determination among security agencies and government authorities to tackle kidnapping and insecurity more effectively, while ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning and development.
