The Labour Party (LP) has unveiled public health expert and humanitarian practitioner, Hajja Bintu Konto, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, pairing her with the party’s presidential flag bearer, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, in what it described as a ticket anchored on competence, inclusiveness and national unity.
The announcement, contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, followed what the party said were extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the country.
The party said Konto’s emergence reflected its determination to present Nigerians with a leadership team possessing broad experience in governance, humanitarian service and community development.
A seasoned public health specialist, nurse, midwife and development practitioner, Konto has spent more than three decades working in healthcare delivery and humanitarian interventions, particularly in conflict-affected communities across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.
Before her retirement from Catholic Relief Services (CRS), she served in several strategic positions, including Community and Government Liaison Programme Officer, coordinating engagements with governments, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and development partners on health, nutrition, water, sanitation and humanitarian programmes.
The Labour Party said Konto also spearheaded community mobilisation and multisectoral interventions that improved the lives of thousands of internally displaced persons and other vulnerable populations in the North-East.
She holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and has served as a lecturer in Community Health. She is also a member of Nigeria’s Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) of the Global Fund and currently serves as National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunisation and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
According to the party, Konto’s experience in humanitarian coordination, public health administration, women’s empowerment and conflict-sensitive programming, coupled with her fluency in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, makes her well-suited for national leadership.
The LP said the nomination reinforces its commitment to gender inclusion and national cohesion while presenting what it described as “a new generation of purposeful, people-centred leadership.”
The party expressed confidence that the Okereke-Konto ticket would offer Nigerians an alternative focused on economic recovery, improved security, institutional reforms and accountable governance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
With the unveiling, the Labour Party joins the growing list of political parties that have concluded the selection of their presidential tickets as preparations gather momentum for the 2027 general election.
