Lions Club International District 404B4 has prioritised diabetes screening and awareness with plans to raise N100 million to fund health and humanitarian projects aimed at reaching at least 10,000 beneficiaries across communities in Lagos and Ogun states.
The District Governor, Patience Okosi, who described the diabetes screening as her top priority for the year, said the district would establish screening centres, provide referrals for treatment and screening for adults and children while expanding diabetes awareness efforts to promote early detection and improve public awareness of the disease.
Okosi said the district plans to raise about N100 million through fundraising efforts to finance its priority projects, particularly diabetes screening, awareness campaigns and related humanitarian interventions.
The District Governor, while speaking at a media briefing to mark the commencement of the 2026/2027 Lions year, said the district would also implement programmes focused on vision care, skills acquisition, widow empowerment, environmental sustainability and support for vulnerable groups.
The initiatives, according to her, include plans to empower 50 widows with sewing and branding machines, strengthen vocational training for youths and women, and expand eye-care services to help reduce preventable blindness.
She, however, identified poverty and hunger as the most pressing humanitarian challenges, citing the economic hardship facing many Nigerians and urging greater attention to grassroots interventions that improve access to food and basic support for vulnerable households.
Also, the Pioneer District Governor, Samson Abodunrin, said poor dietary habits and limited awareness of diabetes risks underscored the need for greater advocacy, screening and treatment.
He noted that untreated diabetes could lead to complications, including vision loss, kidney disease and death.
Abodunrin said the district’s focus on diabetes does not mean it would abandon hunger-relief programmes, noting that hunger remains one of Lions Club’s core causes.
First Vice District Governor, Wale Obisesan, said all clubs within the district would align with the governor’s agenda, describing service as the organisation’s central mission.
He expressed confidence that collaboration among district leaders and clubs would help achieve the administration’s objectives during the year.
