‘NIMC Act will advance digital identity ecosystems’, says FG

Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote

The Federal Government has stated that the recent re-enactment of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 is a significant milestone that will advance Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem and lay a robust foundation for trusted digital services.

Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Usman, stated this when she received the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, during a working visit to the Central Results Delivery Coordination Unit (CRDCU) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Usman stressed the critical need for strengthened collaboration between both institutions to ensure the successful implementation of shared national objectives noting that the new legislation will foster improved governance and enhance public service delivery nationwide.

Reaffirming the presidency’s commitment to supporting the commission, the special adviser noted the importance of synergy in driving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s identity reform agenda.

NIMC management presented key highlights of the 2026 Act. These provisions include the mandatory use of the National Identification Number (NIN) and positioning the commission as the root certification authority for Public Key Infrastructure (KPI) and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

The legislation also introduces stronger enforcement and penalties, strict data protection and privacy measures, and a broader mandate for digital transformation.
To guarantee a seamless rollout, the Special Adviser proposed the establishment of a joint working group between the CRDCU and the commission.

“This initiative will significantly improve accountability and service delivery across the board,” she noted.

Usman further said the Act would enhance coordination and promote effective monitoring of performance through electronic systems.

On her part, Coker-Odusote reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to fulfilling its mandate and contributing meaningfully to the digital transformation of Nigeria.
