Nigeria needs more leaders like Balami, says Ukaegbu

Isaac David Balami

Public affairs analyst, preacher and advocate for good governance, Oswald Amaechi Ukaegbu, popularly known as Meche, has described aviation entrepreneur and founder of 7Star Global Hangar, Dr Isaac David Balami, as a model of compassionate and selfless leadership, urging more Nigerians to emulate his example.

In an article titled The Man in the David Skin, Meche reflected on Balami’s leadership style, praising his humility, accessibility and commitment to empowering young Nigerians.

The article follows Balami’s recent initiative to support young people through his aviation school, which the analyst cited as one of several examples of his commitment to human development.

According to Meche, Balami’s greatest achievement lies not only in his accomplishments within Nigeria’s aviation industry but also in the way he relates to people irrespective of their tribe, religion, social status or background.

He explained that his decision to write the article was inspired by a personal encounter with Balami rather than any public speech or media appearance.

“The manner in which Dr Isaac David Balami receives and treats people, regardless of their social status, religion, tribe, or background, serves as proof that his humility is not selective. It is intrinsic to his nature,” Meche wrote.

He added that despite Balami’s success, he has remained approachable and grounded.

“Anyone who has met him would appreciate that greatness need not be loud to be felt,” he said.

While acknowledging that some readers might view his admiration as excessive, Meche maintained that exceptional character deserves public recognition.

“I am always on the lookout for attributes to admire and applaud in the life of a leader, and Dr Balami has not disappointed me,” he stated.

According to the analyst, Balami’s conduct demonstrates that wealth, influence and professional success need not diminish empathy or respect for others.

He noted that the Borno State-born aircraft engineer rose from modest beginnings through resilience, hard work and technical competence to establish 7Star Global Hangar and become a respected figure within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Meche suggested that Balami’s personal experiences have shaped his appreciation of people’s struggles and informed his willingness to support others.

He also commended Balami’s approach to leadership, describing his refusal to judge individuals by ethnicity, religion or social status as particularly significant.

“He grants people opportunities based on merit rather than sentiment. In a nation still struggling with the burdens of ethnic and religious divisions, this is not just refreshing. It is exemplary,” he wrote.

The analyst argued that Nigeria needs more leaders who combine professional competence with compassion, humility and emotional intelligence.

He lamented what he described as a growing shortage of leaders who genuinely value people, suggesting that arrogance has increasingly been mistaken for strength.

“Perhaps the greatest crisis confronting Nigeria today is not merely bad policies or weak institutions. It is the gradual disappearance of leaders who genuinely value human beings,” Meche said.

According to him, Balami’s leadership style offers an alternative model built on service, fairness and the recognition of merit.

He concluded by stressing that the true measure of leadership lies not in titles or influence but in the positive impact leaders have on the lives of others.

“The true test of greatness is not the number of people who salute a leader, but the number of lives that become better because that leader chose to remain human,” he wrote.
