A little over two years ago, while I was home in Nigeria, I bought a standing fan from a local shop. After I paid, the seller gave me a paper receipt. I folded it, put it in my pocket, and went home.
A few days later, I needed the receipt, but I could not find it. I searched everywhere. I even thought about going back to the shop to ask for another copy, but it was too far. In the end, I forgot about it because it was only a standing fan.
But I did not forget the experience.
I kept asking myself, why are we still using paper receipts when almost everything else has gone digital?
That simple question stayed in my mind for a long time.
Paper receipts have been part of business for many years. They worked well when almost everything was done on paper. But business has changed. Today, customers pay through bank transfers, POS terminals, and mobile banking apps. Yet many businesses still hand over a paper receipt that can easily get lost, torn, or fade with time.
The problem is not the paper itself. The problem is what happens after the paper is gone. When a receipt gets lost, finding the details of that transaction can become difficult. Business owners spend time searching through receipt books.
Customers ask for another copy, but there is no easy way to provide one. Keeping proper records becomes harder than it should be.
As I spoke with more business owners, I realised my experience was not different from theirs. Many told me they found it difficult to track customer payments. Some struggled to balance their daily sales. Others admitted that they sometimes depended on memory when a customer asked questions about a previous payment.
These are not problems caused by a lack of hard work. They happen because many businesses are still using a system that no longer matches the way business is done today.
This is where digital receipts make a real difference.
A digital receipt is not just an electronic copy of a paper receipt. It gives both the business owner and the customer a record that can be found again whenever it is needed. It can be sent through WhatsApp, SMS, email, Telegram, or downloaded later. It does not get lost in a pocket or disappear with time.
For businesses, the benefits go beyond the receipt itself. It becomes easier to keep sales records, follow up on customer payments, reduce mistakes, and stay organised. Customers also feel more confident because they know their receipt is always available.
Nigeria is becoming more digital every day. More businesses now accept electronic payments, and customers expect faster and better service. Digital record-keeping and electronic invoicing are also becoming more important. Businesses that start keeping better digital records today will find it easier to adapt to tomorrow.
That lost receipt for a standing fan was one of the reasons I created NairaTrack
I did not create it because I wanted another business app. I created it because I experienced a real problem, and I discovered that many other business owners were facing the same challenge.
NairaTrack is a platform built by a Nigerian for Nigerian businesses. It helps businesses create professional digital receipts, keep sales records in one place, track customer payments, send payment reminders, and deliver receipts through the digital channels their customers already use.
The goal is simple: help business owners spend less time on paperwork, get paid faster, and stay organised.
I do not believe every business needs expensive software or complicated technology. But I do believe every business deserves simple tools that make work easier and help them serve their customers better.
Paper receipts have served Nigerian businesses for many years. There is nothing wrong with that. But I believe the time has come to move forward. A simple change like using digital receipts can save time, improve record-keeping, build customer trust, and make running a business much easier.
Sometimes, the biggest improvements do not start with a big decision. Sometimes, they start with one small change.
Replacing a paper receipt with a digital one could be one of them.
