The MTN Foundation and the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) have graduated a new cohort of students under their music scholarship programme, reinforcing a two-decade partnership aimed at developing professional musicians and strengthening Nigeria’s creative industry.

The graduation ceremony, held at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, marked the completion of the scholars’ two-year Diploma in Music programme, culminating in a concert featuring performances by the graduating students and the MUSON School Orchestra.

Since the partnership began in 2006, more than 500 young Nigerians have received fully funded scholarships through the MTN Foundation and MUSON Music Scholars Programme, which offers an internationally recognised Diploma in Music comparable to qualifications awarded by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in the United Kingdom.

Chairman of the MTN Foundation, Dr. Mosun Belo-Olusoga, described the initiative as a long-term investment in Nigeria’s creative future.

“Through our partnership with MUSON, we are expanding access to premium music education. You are no longer just performers; you are cultural ambassadors and vital contributors to a rapidly expanding creative economy,” she told the graduating students.

Acting Director of the MUSON School of Music, Sir Emeka Nwokedi, said the Foundation’s support had enabled talented young Nigerians to access world-class music education regardless of their financial circumstances.

“The support of the MTN Foundation has been instrumental in ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of raw talent,” he said, adding that graduates were equipped not only with performance skills but also with the discipline and collaborative abilities required for professional careers.

President of the MUSON Alumni Association, Sunday Okpo, said the programme transformed participants both musically and personally.

“Music teaches discipline, patience and humility. It teaches us to listen not only to sound, but to one another,” he said.

Beyond scholarships, the MTN Foundation has invested in the school’s infrastructure, including the construction of a fully equipped digital music studio in 2022 fitted with professional instruments and learning equipment to enhance music education.

The organisers said the partnership remains focused on producing skilled musicians for careers in performance, education, production and other areas of Nigeria’s growing creative economy.
