President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman, veteran journalist and former Ogun State Governor, Aremo Chief Olusegun Osoba, describing him as “a brother in purpose” whose life has been defined by integrity, service and an unwavering commitment to the ideals of good governance.
In a heartfelt birthday message on Wednesday to commemorate Osoba’s 87th birthday, the President reflected on their decades-long relationship, recalling shared political struggles, strategic engagements and a common belief that Nigeria could be governed with competence, respect for institutions and accountability.
Tinubu said although they came into public life through different paths, they were united by a shared vision of building a nation where leadership is anchored on service to the people.
“I have known Aremo Chief Olusegun Osoba for so many years that we could easily write a book about one another. Behind the titles, the pen and the politics stands a man whose first instinct is always to serve,” the President said.
According to him, their friendship was forged through difficult political campaigns, late-night strategy sessions and countless debates centred on advancing the nation’s democratic ideals.
The President praised Osoba’s enduring commitment to federalism, responsible journalism and accessible leadership, describing the former governor as a statesman who remained faithful to his principles both in public and private life.
Tinubu also highlighted Osoba’s distinguished career as a journalist, recalling how he mentored younger reporters with patience and humility while insisting that journalism should always reflect the human impact of every story.
“I watched how he treated young reporters, never with condescension, always with a correction and a story to go with it,” he noted.
The President further commended Osoba’s calm disposition during difficult political moments, saying his wealth of historical knowledge and reflections on the legacy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo often provided perspective and reassurance in challenging times.
“What I admire most in Aremo is his consistency. In public and in private, he is the same man,” Tinubu said, adding that Osoba’s civility, humility and respect for others have remained constant throughout his public life.
Rather than praying for more honours, the President said his wish for the elder statesman was continued good health and the fulfilment of the ideals they had jointly pursued over the years.
“I wish him health and more mornings to enjoy his tea and read the newspapers. I wish him the joy of seeing the ideas we nurtured together take deeper root, schools that work, roads that last, and a government that answers to its people,” he stated.
Expressing gratitude for Osoba’s friendship and counsel over the years, Tinubu concluded: “Aremo, thank you for being a brother in purpose. Thank you for the counsel, your laughter and for the reminder that leadership without character is worthless.
“May your new year bring you peace, and may we continue the work together.”
