Ikeja Hotels, owners of the Sheraton Lagos Hotel, has reinforced its commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency with the commissioning of a new gas-powered generator, a move expected to reduce carbon emissions, lower operating costs and provide a more reliable power supply for guests.
Speaking at the commissioning, the hotel’s General Manager, Martins Brednoord, said the investment aligns with Sheraton Lagos’ Green Key sustainability initiatives and its commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards.
“We are extremely happy about this milestone and very thankful to the owning company as well, Ikeja Hotel PLC, for seeing the worth in the investment on purchasing a gas generator. The generator is purchased outright, it’s not a rental. It’s completely owned by Ikeja Hotel PLC and obviously managed by us, Sheraton Lagos Hotel,” he stated.
Brednoord linked the investment decision to the rising costs of electricity, diesel and the upkeep of diesel-powered engines. Early testing, he said, has already shown a marked drop in running costs, with the hotel projecting an 18-month return on investment.
He framed the move as part of a broader industry shift. “Enough of pollution, enough of risk of health hazards,” he said, adding that as a hospitality business serving guests from across the world, Sheraton Lagos has a responsibility to modernise its energy use and reduce its environmental footprint.
The hotel’s sustainability efforts have already earned recognition, with Brednoord noting that Sheraton Lagos has been named Nigeria’s best hotel for sustainability for three consecutive years, including an award collected just a day before the commissioning.
Outlet Manager, FeyisayoOluwaseyi, outlined the more immediate, practical benefits of the switch. Unlike diesel generators, he said, gas-powered alternatives produce significantly less noise, soot and air pollution, a shift he described as fundamentally cleaner for both guests and the surrounding Ikeja community.
“By making this switch, we are significantly reducing localized pollution,” he said, adding that natural gas burns more efficiently than diesel, resulting in substantially lower CO2 emissions. With cleaner air for our guests, our team, and the community, Sheraton Ikeja Hotels stands for something: that we are part of the environment and we are supporting the environment by not emitting pollution into the air.”
He tied the initiative to the hotel’s long-term environmental goals, including its 2030 sustainability targets. “We are not just looking at operational efficiency; we are actively participating in the global solution for climate change,” Feyisayo added.
The commissioning of the gas-powered generator marks another milestone in Sheraton Lagos’ sustainability journey, underscoring its commitment to cleaner energy, operational excellence and responsible environmental stewardship.
