Kano Mulls Restriction on Heavy Trucks in Metropolis on Daylight Hours

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf

Worried by the increasing traffic congestion on major roads in the city centre, Kano State Government has announced plans to restrict movement of heavy-duty trucks into metropolis during the daytime.

Under the new policy, government said entrance of heavy trucks will be barred from gaining access to the city from 6:00am and until nightfall as part of efforts to reduce traffic and improve vehicular movement within the city.

Speaking with journalists on Friday on the latest plan, Commissioner for Transportation, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, revealed that all necessary arrangements have been concluded for the implementation of the new traffic policy in Kano.

The Commissioner asserted that initiative of this nature became pertinent in Kano considering it’s growing population with largest commercial activities in the region.

Dederi who reaffirmed government’s commitment to enforce policy to improve on lives and wellbeing of residents noted that the policy is part of heavy broader partnership between the state government and a private company aimed at modernising traffic management and enhancing the transportation system in Kano.

He identified six major entry routes for the implementation including major routes currently experiencing severe traffic congestion Kano- Katsina, Kano- Zaria, Kano-Danbatta, Kano-Gwarzo, Kano-Wudil, and Hadejia roads.

The Commissioner reminded that the restriction which will commence soon is expected to significantly ease pressure on these busy corridors and improve mobility for commuters and businesses.

The Managing Director of the private partner, Alhaji Kafilu Abdulkadir, said a similar system introduced in Lagos State in 2007 had successfully reduced traffic congestion through the establishment of designated truck parks.

He revealed that a modern truck terminal would be constructed at Daka Tsalle, stressing that more than 3,000 heavy trucks enter Kano daily, making the project crucial to tackling persistent gridlock on the city’s major access roads.
