A Graduate Researcher at Western Illinois University, Basel Atiyire, has bagged an Award of Excellence after emerging as the top performer at a prestigious Capture the Flag (CTF) cybersecurity competition in the United States.
The award came following his outstanding performance in the highly competitive challenge, which provided graduate and undergraduate students of Western Illinois University with a hands-on opportunity to demonstrate their expertise in digital forensics and cybersecurity. Participants were tasked with using advanced computer forensic tools to analyse a supplied disk image, retrieve hidden digital evidence, and present critical findings in a real-world investigative scenario.
Atiyire distinguished himself from the field through his technical precision, analytical depth, and ability to uncover and interpret crucial digital artefacts, earning him the competition’s highest honours and the institution’s Award of Excellence for exceptional performance in cybersecurity.
Reacting to the recognition, the Ghanaian cybersecurity expert described the award as both humbling and motivating, saying it reflects years of dedication to mastering emerging technologies and solving complex cybersecurity problems.
“This recognition means a great deal to me because it validates the countless hours spent learning, experimenting and challenging myself beyond the classroom.
Cybersecurity is a rapidly evolving field, and competitions like this remind us that continuous learning and practical problem-solving are indispensable,” he said.
He added: “Winning this competition is not just a personal achievement; it is also a reminder that young African professionals can compete favourably on the global stage when given the right opportunities. I hope this inspires more students to embrace cybersecurity, digital forensics and artificial intelligence as tools for solving real-world problems.”
Beyond the competition, Atiyire has built a growing reputation as an AI engineer and cybersecurity professional with expertise in operational AI systems, workflow automation, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), backend engineering, and intelligent automation. His work combines artificial intelligence with secure digital infrastructure to improve operational efficiency across organisations.
Currently pursuing a Master of Science in Computer Science at Western Illinois University, he has developed several AI-powered platforms, including an Agentic Human Resource Management System, an enterprise Financial AI Research Platform, and an LLM Portfolio Intelligence Engine.
His professional experience also includes designing AI-native workflow automation systems, deploying scalable backend services, and building evaluation pipelines that improve the reliability of AI-generated outputs.
Atiyire also recently co-authored a research paper proposing an advanced Online Crime Report System that seeks to transform digital crime reporting through the integration of multilingual support, anonymous reporting capabilities, advanced data analytics, and highly scalable cloud-ready architecture.
The research, which adopts the Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodology, argues that modern crime reporting platforms must go beyond traditional reporting portals by offering systems that are reliable, highly available, durable and capable of supporting large-scale law enforcement operations while remaining accessible to users from diverse backgrounds.
According to Atiyire, cybersecurity should not only focus on defending digital infrastructure but also on building technologies that strengthen public trust and improve access to essential services.
“My passion has always been to build secure, intelligent systems that solve practical societal challenges. Whether it is artificial intelligence, digital forensics or cyber defence, the ultimate goal is creating technology that people can trust and that institutions can depend on,” he said.
The latest recognition further cements Atiyire’s growing profile as one of Ghana’s emerging cybersecurity and artificial intelligence professionals, demonstrating that African innovators are increasingly making their mark in global technology research, digital security and next-generation intelligent systems.
