Macdi leverages digital influence, showcases Senegal to global audience

Senegalese content creator and actor, Mame Cheikh Diongue, also known as Macdi, is leveraging his growing digital influence to promote Senegalese culture and creativity to a global audience.

With an estimated 15.6 million followers across YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, he has emerged as one of Senegal’s most followed digital creators, using comedy, storytelling and lifestyle content to project a positive image of his country beyond Africa.

The creator, who was born in Mbacké and raised in Thiès, has built a reputation for producing entertaining videos that celebrate Senegal’s culture, people and everyday experiences while attracting millions of viewers worldwide.

Macdi’s rise to prominence has been marked by an unconventional journey. After leaving school in the ninth grade, he worked as a metalworker before a prolonged illness forced him away from work for several years. Rather than ending his ambitions, the setback became the turning point that led him into digital content creation.

He began uploading videos on YouTube in 2020 before expanding to other social media platforms, where his audience has grown rapidly in the last few years, making him one of the leading faces of Senegal’s digital entertainment industry.

Beyond entertainment, he says he is committed to using his online presence to improve international awareness of Senegal by highlighting its culture, creativity and tourism potential through relatable content.

His videos, which combine humour with everyday storytelling, have helped him connect with audiences across different countries while positioning Senegal as a destination with a vibrant creative ecosystem.

Industry observers say the emergence of creators such as Macdi reflects the increasing influence of African digital content producers, who are using social media not only as a source of entertainment but also as a platform for cultural promotion and national branding.

From his beginnings as a metalworker to becoming one of Senegal’s biggest online personalities, Macdi’s career underscores the growing opportunities within Africa’s creator economy, where digital platforms are enabling a new generation of creatives to build global audiences while telling authentic local stories
