The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) said the deployment of an electronic call-up system, expansion of port infrastructure and the strategic advantages offered by the Oil and Gas Free Zone at the port have enhanced operational efficiency and positioned the complex as the fastest-growing export and logistics hub for eastern and northern markets.

The Port Manager, Onne Port Complex, Abdulrahmon Hussain, disclosed this to members of the Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) during a tour of the port.

Hussain, who was represented by the Traffic Manager, Surajudeen Abolade, highlighted the facility’s operational strengths, digital innovations, export capacity and future expansion plans.

Hussain noted that the port handles diverse cargo streams destined for eastern and northern markets, including containers, general cargo, liquid bulk and oil and gas cargo, making effective traffic management essential to avoid operational conflicts.

Hussain said the NPA introduced an electronic call-up system that has significantly streamlined and improved truck traffic management, reduced human interference in cargo movement into the port, while enhancing cargo security through real-time monitoring and automation.

He explained that all trucks destined for the port are required to first report at a designated truck park located outside the port corridor, where they are issued radio frequency identification (RFID) tags before gaining access to the terminals.

Hussain added that the digital platform has also strengthened cargo security, as cameras installed across the port monitor, track and record every truck movement from entry to exit, enabling operators to trace cargo movements whenever necessary.

He disclosed that only about 49 per cent of the port’s land area has been developed, leaving more than half of the complex available for future expansion.
