The Head of Media and Publicity of the Osun All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, has urged Osun residents to assess Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, based on his record as Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund and his contributions to governance, rather than his campaign appearances.

Omowaiye made the remarks during a broadcast on News Central TV while reacting to Davido’s participation in campaign activities for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

He alleged that the singer becomes politically active only during election periods, accusing him of distributing money to residents and taking advantage of what he described as their vulnerability.

According to Omowaiye, voters are now more concerned with governance and service delivery than celebrity endorsements.

“But this time around, people are wise. Today, Osun State University is the most expensive government-owned university in Nigeria,” he said.

The APC campaign spokesman questioned whether Davido had used his influence to advocate lower tuition fees, particularly for students of the University of Ilesa, where he alleged that some students pay as much as N1.5 million.

He contrasted the situation with the promise by the APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, to reduce tuition fees if elected.

“So, would Davido tell a boy struggling to pay N1.5 million at the University of Ilesa that Bola Oyebamiji has promised to reduce the school fees?” he asked.

Omowaiye also criticised Davido’s performance as Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, alleging that the state has no functional government-owned stadium despite his appointment.

“Davido himself was made Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund, but as we speak, there is no single functional government-owned stadium in Osun,” he said.

He further alleged that under Davido’s tenure as chairman, both the state’s male and female football clubs had been relegated.

“We do not have a single stadium. Davido has not contributed. All he knows is to come and take advantage of vulnerable youths, but this time around they are wise,” he added.

Omowaiye also accused the Adeleke family of concentrating public appointments among relatives instead of creating opportunities for young people across the state.

He said Davido serves as Chairman of the Sports Trust Fund, while his brother, Tunji Adeleke Jr., was appointed Chairman of the Osun State Local Government Service Commission at the age of 31. He also claimed that another cousin serves as Senior Special Assistant on Tourism.

“They are recycling these positions within their family. You will come, jump around and dance during campaigns, but when the time comes to reward the youths, they are left behind. He has not fought for the youths of Osun,” he said.

The APC spokesman also questioned Davido’s silence on what he described as key governance challenges in the state, including education, healthcare, infrastructure and electricity reforms.

“What have you heard Davido has done? Has Davido built a single school? Has Davido come out to tell his uncle that charging N1.5 million at the University of Ilesa is too expensive?

“Has Davido come out to say there are no drugs in our hospitals and that something needs to be done? The number of teachers we have in the entire Osun State is lower than what some local governments in Nigeria have.

“Has Davido told his uncle that our schools are in a terrible situation? Roads are in a terrible condition. Has he spoken to his uncle? Did he speak out over the alleged payment of N13.7 billion to ghost workers? Has he spoken on the Electricity Act or why Osun has not made significant progress in implementing it?” he asked.

Omowaiye maintained that the people of Osun would not be swayed by celebrity influence, insisting they would vote based on governance and performance rather than popularity.

He also referenced comments he attributed to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who allegedly said Davido should employ Governor Ademola Adeleke as a dancer if he loses the August 15 governorship election.

Omowaiye’s remarks come after Davido joined Governor Adeleke at a campaign rally in Osun as political activities intensified ahead of the governorship poll.

The singer arrived in the state on Thursday, August 6, and has actively participated in campaign events in support of his uncle’s re-election bid.

Videos from the rally showed Davido making his way through a large crowd alongside the governor’s son, Sina Adeleke, popularly known as Shina Rambo, before both climbed over a barricade to join Governor Adeleke on the campaign stage, where they danced before supporters.

Davido and the Osun State Government had not publicly responded to Omowaiye’s allegations as of the time of filing this report.
