Workers of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have threatened to embark on a warning strike on Wednesday, August 12, over the non-payment of minimum wage arrears.

The workers also alleged failure of the management to implement agreements reached with them on their conditions of service.

The unions, Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) and Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), in separate circulars, said the action had become necessary following the failure of the relevant authorities to resolve the workers’ grievances despite several meetings, agreements and assurances.

AUPCTRE in a circular dated July 31, 2026 and addressed to the Director-General of NiMet, said the outstanding issues had persisted since 2024, with successive commitments on the payment of the arrears failing to materialise.

The union warned that unless the issues were resolved, its members would commence the warning strike on August 12, after which an indefinite industrial action would follow without further notice.

According to AUPCTRE, the workers had demonstrated considerable patience and understanding over the prolonged delay in resolving the issues but had now reached the limit of their tolerance.

The circular read in part: “You will recall that the above subject matter has been a recurring issue in the agency since 2024.

“And, despite many rescheduling of this payment based on interventions of the Honourable Minister of Aviation, the rescheduled dates passed without fulfilment of the promises made by various government agencies.”

It further stated that workers had continued to wait for the implementation of agreements reached with the authorities, stressing that their patience had yielded no benefit.

Apart from the minimum wage arrears, the union also said several provisions relating to the workers’ conditions of service remained unresolved.

It specifically mentioned the non-implementation of the subsistence allowance and the newly approved salary structure, which it said had either been left pending or only partially implemented.

The union argued that the delays had become increasingly difficult for workers to bear amid the prevailing economic hardship.

Also, ANAP in a circular dated August 5, 2026 and signed by its General Secretary, Saidu Abdulrazaq, expressed worry that despite the many rescheduling meetings on the wages of members and the various interventions by Keyamo, the rescheduled dates passed without fulfilment of the promises made by the agency.

He insisted that the workers and their unions had shown unequalled patience and perseverance in the last two years, but without result.

“Accordingly, ANAP hereby notifies your management that with effect from August 12, 2026, the union shall direct the workers to embark on a warning strike of 24 hours unless the outstanding issues are resolved.

“After the warning strike, if the issues remain unresolved, then an indefinite strike shall ensue without further warning or notice.”
