The Oyo State Government has unveiled its 2026–2040 Climate Action Plan, seeking to attract investments, create green jobs and strengthen partnerships to address climate-related challenges across the state.

The state government said the Oyo State Climate Action Plan (OYCAP) 2026–2040, published on its official website, provides a framework for citizens, development partners, investors, researchers and other stakeholders to align with the state’s climate goals.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said OYCAP provides a science-based roadmap for tackling climate-related challenges, including flooding, heatwaves, drought, environmental pollution, food insecurity, ill health and reduced productivity.

Aderinto said the plan aligns Oyo State’s climate actions with global frameworks, including the Paris Agreement and Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), thereby strengthening the state’s prospects of accessing climate finance and attracting strategic partnerships.

He explained that OYCAP would guide Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in planning and implementing climate-related projects in critical sectors such as health, agriculture, infrastructure and the environment.

According to him, the plan provides strategies for reducing climate risks through improved flood management, protection of wetlands, early warning systems and climate-smart agriculture, as well as measures to address the health effects of heatwaves, air pollution and poor waste management.

The commissioner said the climate plan also presented economic opportunities for the state, particularly through green jobs and investments in waste-to-energy, recycling, renewable energy and tree planting.

He added that the framework could attract climate finance and investments from international development partners, financial institutions and the private sector.

Aderinto therefore called on local and international investors and development partners to take advantage of the opportunities provided by OYCAP to explore infrastructural and climate-resilient investment opportunities in Oyo State.

He stressed that the state was open to partnerships that would support sustainable development and strengthen its capacity to respond to climate change.

The commissioner described OYCAP as more than a policy document, saying it was a public tool for action, investment, funding and accountability.
