Art people podcast spotlights people shaping Nigerian art, culture

Kayode Adegbola

Lagos-based gallerist, collector and cultural entrepreneur, Kayode Adegbola, has introduced Art People, a new video podcast exploring Nigerian art and culture through conversations with the people shaping the sector.

Hosted by Lagos-based twin brothers and art collectors, Ohi and Okhai Ohiwerei, the series is presented by Adegbola Art Projects and produced by Mango Tree Media.

The podcast brings together artists, collectors, gallerists, advisers and cultural entrepreneurs for long-form conversations on subjects ranging from studio practice and art history to collecting, pricing, career development, gallery-building and cultural infrastructure.

At a time of growing international attention on Nigerian art, Art People seeks to foreground the voices and experiences of those building the country’s cultural landscape from within.

Rather than focusing solely on exhibition openings, art fairs and auction results, the podcast examines how artists develop their practices, how collectors learn to look, what it takes to build and sustain an art space, and how local histories are shaping the future of Nigeria’s art market.

Conversations released so far include painter Duke Asidere on life, structure and his Black Painting series; Chidinma Nnoli on navigating a career as a young Nigerian artist; art consultant Sunshine Alaibe on finding a path through the Nigerian art scene; artist Ayoola Omogbolahan on risk and recognition; gallerist Dozie Igweze on building Hourglass Gallery; and collector Niyi Adenubi on collecting Nigerian art, creating impact and shaping its future.

“We have always been interested in the people behind the work: how they found their way into art, how they make decisions and what keeps them committed. Art People gives us the chance to ask those questions openly and to make the Nigerian art world feel more accessible to anyone who is curious about it,” Ohi and Okhai said.

The podcast is part of Adegbola’s wider commitment to deepening public understanding of Nigerian art. He is the founder of Adegbola Gallery, a Lagos-based art gallery connecting Nigerian modernism with contemporary practice, and The Vault Artist Residency, which supports artists through studio space, mentorship and professional development.

The series will continue throughout 2026, with further conversations featuring artists, collectors, curators, gallerists and cultural entrepreneurs from Lagos and beyond.

Upcoming guests include artists Orry Shenjobi and Abiodun Olaku, as well as gallerists Sosa Omoregbe, Oyinkan Dada and Ima Ekpo.

The series will also feature special episodes with Adegbola and Ugoma Ebilah of the newly established art society, Mbari Kola.
