The Action Alliance presidential candidate, Adekunle Omo-Aje, on Wednesday, has advised political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to maintain the integrity of the 2027 general elections after signing the National Peace Accord alongside other presidential candidates and political party leaders in Abuja on Tuesday.
The agreement was organized by the National Peace Committee, led by former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, working with the Kukah Centre, while the signing by political leaders took place at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.
The goal is to stop political rivalries from turning violent, something Nigeria has struggled with in past elections, both before and after voting, and to agree to run peaceful campaigns focused on real issues ahead of the elections.
In a statement made in Kaduna to journalists, Omo-Aje explained the accord as a call to political actors and institutions to protect the integrity of the electoral process.
Omo-Aje encouraged all parties to strictly abide by the terms of the agreement: “INEC must resist pressure and ensure that the votes of Nigerians count. The Commission should provide a level playing field for all parties, big or small.”
He also urged security agencies to uphold professionalism and neutrality during the entire election process.
“Our security agencies must protect lives and property before, during, and after the elections. They must not be used to intimidate voters or favour any political party. Professionalism is key to credible elections,” he highlighted.
Omo-Aje further stressed that Nigeria’s democracy could be enhanced only when state institutions were allowed to operate independently, and political actors placed the welfare of citizens above the pursuit of power.
He called on the political class to centre their campaigns on issues that genuinely affect Nigerians, rather than resorting to divisive rhetoric that threatens to fracture the nation.
President Bola Tinubu was represented at the signing by SGF George Akume, while Nentawe Yilwatda, chairman of the APC, signed on behalf of the ruling party.
Campaigns for president, National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly seats were set to begin nationwide on Wednesday, with parties reaching out to voters across all 36 states and the FCT.
