Police arrest man over alleged attempt to burn wife

Suspect, Jacob Irewa

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man, Jacob Irewa, over an alleged attempt to set his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze in Lokoja, the state capital.

The command said in a statement issued on Sunday that the incident occurred at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja, following a domestic disagreement between the couple.

According to the statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, at about 8:30pm.

The police said the B Division Surveillance Team in Felele received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission,” the statement said.

The disagreement allegedly escalated after Irewa threatened his wife, before fetching petrol from his motorcycle and setting her ablaze.

The victim survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele, according to the police.

The command said the suspect had admitted during interrogation to setting his wife on fire.

“ The suspect, in his statement to the Police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze,” the statement said.

Police said a comprehensive investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather additional evidence.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the alleged attack and reiterated the command’s position against violence, particularly domestic violence.

He urged members of the public to resolve domestic disagreements through lawful means and avoid actions that could put lives at risk.

The police commissioner also said the command would continue to protect lives and property while ensuring that people suspected of committing violent crimes are brought to justice.

The command said Irewa would be charged to court for prosecution after the completion of the investigation.

The case adds to concerns over domestic violence, with police authorities repeatedly urging members of the public to seek intervention through lawful and peaceful channels when disputes arise within families.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigators continue their probe into the alleged attack.

The allegation against Irewa has not been tested in court and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
