APC support group canvasses party reforms

Barely a few days after the conclusion of the Osun State governorship election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Resident Community Support Groups Worldwide (ARCSGWW) has said that the party leadership has failed to implement key internal reforms despite the directive from President Bola Tinubu.

The group, which claimed to have more than 2.3 million active members with Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) across the 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the diaspora, has consequently issued a 14-day ultimatum to the APC National Working Committee (NWC) to address alleged constitutional breaches, marginalisation and lack of recognition of support groups within the party structure.

The demands were contained in a letter of resolution addressed to the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, and members of the NWC, dated August 19 and signed by its President, Luke Jacob.

The group also copied President Tinubu, the APC National Secretary, all Zonal Chairmen of the party and the Director-General of the APC Support Groups Directorate.

According to the group, the resolutions followed consultations with its structures across the country and its diaspora chapters, stressing that it remained committed to the APC and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.

At the centre of its grievances is the alleged failure by the party leadership to ratify and implement the amended APC constitution.

The group urged the NWC to immediately comply with the President’s directive on the amended constitution, stressing that adherence to the party’s own rules was critical to strengthening internal democracy and ensuring party supremacy.

The letter read in part: “We resolve and demand that the party immediately respect the directive of Mr. President and proceed with the ratification and full implementation of the amended APC Constitution.

“Party supremacy, internal democracy and adherence to our own rules must be upheld to strengthen the party ahead of the upcoming general elections.”

The support groups also demanded formal constitutional recognition as a statutory organ of the APC, rejecting the perception that support groups were merely informal platforms operating on social media.

According to the group, its members had played significant roles in grassroots mobilisation and electoral campaigns for the party and should therefore be integrated into the formal structure of the APC.

“We are not a ‘WhatsApp Group’. We are the mobilisers, defenders and grassroots engine room of the party,” the group said.

The group further demanded constitutional backing, representation and a direct channel of engagement between support groups, the NWC and other organs of the party.

The group also accused the leadership of selective recognition of national deputy officers within the NWC.

It specifically cited positions such as Deputy National Youth Leader, Deputy National Treasurer and Deputy National Legal Adviser, arguing that all national deputy officers should either be recognised as full members of the NWC or none should be accorded such status.

The ARCSGWW further linked its concerns to the APC’s performance in Osun State, alleging that the exclusion of support groups from the electoral process and the marginalisation of some party officers contributed to the party’s poor showing despite the huge resources reportedly deployed for the election.

It warned that unless the grievances were urgently addressed, similar challenges could affect the party’s prospects in the January 2027 general elections.

The group therefore gave the NWC 14 days to implement the amended constitution, recognise support groups as a statutory organ and resolve what it described as the imbalance in the recognition of national deputy officers.

It warned that failure to meet the demands within the stipulated period would trigger the mobilisation of its members across the country for a peaceful demonstration.

Despite the ultimatum, the group said it remained loyal to the APC and the administration of President Tinubu.

“We believe in Nigeria. We believe in APC. We believe in the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President. We believe in your leadership,” it said.

The group urged the NWC to use the opportunity to build a more inclusive and internally democratic party capable of mobilising its structures effectively ahead of the 2027 general elections.
