Family remembers late Dr Ogbalu six years on

Dr Michael Mbanefo Ogbalu

Family members, friends, colleagues and associates of the late Chief Dr Michael Mbanefo Nwabuonu Ogbalu, popularly known as Ebubedike Abagana, have continued to remember his contributions to medicine, education, public service and community development six years after his death.

Ogbalu, a physician, educator, public servant, community leader, husband, father and grandfather, died on February 29, 2020.

In a tribute marking his remembrance, the family described him as a man whose influence continues to be felt by the people and communities he encountered during his lifetime.

The family said that while his physical absence remains painful, the values he promoted continue to guide those he left behind.

“Some people leave memories. Others leave legacies. Chief Dr Michael Mbanefo Nwabuonu Ogbalu, fondly known as Ebubedike, left both,” the family said.

They recalled his career as a physician committed to healing, an educator who created opportunities for others and a public servant who viewed leadership as a responsibility.

His contributions, they said, extended beyond his professional career to community development, where he devoted his time, knowledge and resources to supporting people and institutions.

The family also remembered Ogbalu for the emphasis he placed on faith, family, hard work, kindness and creating opportunities for future generations.

Among the principles he shared with his family was: “Love your family and your God especially.”

They said the principle reflected his belief in the importance of faith and strong family relationships.

He also encouraged his children and others around him to pursue excellence and create better opportunities for those who would come after them.

“Work hard and be great, and make sure your children are even greater,” the family quoted him as saying.

According to the family, Ogbalu’s philosophy was focused on creating a legacy that would extend beyond his immediate family and benefit future generations.

He was also remembered for his compassion and inclusive approach to people.

“Be kind to all and do not leave anyone behind,” was another principle attributed to him by his family.

They said his commitment to people was reflected in his mentorship and support for young professionals, students, families and members of his community.

“Invest in people because it pays,” they quoted him as saying, describing the statement as one of the principles that captured his approach to life.

The family said the impact of those investments could still be seen in the lives of people he mentored, families he supported and institutions and communities to which he contributed.

They acknowledged that his absence remains particularly noticeable during family gatherings, celebrations and significant milestones when his advice and encouragement would have been valued.

“Yet, even in that longing, there is gratitude, gratitude for a life well lived, lessons generously shared, sacrifices quietly made and a legacy that continues to inspire,” the family said.

They described Ogbalu’s life as an example of how greatness extends beyond professional titles and accomplishments, arguing that his legacy was ultimately defined by character, service, compassion and his impact on others.

“Though he is no longer physically present, his influence remains alive in every life he touched and every heart he inspired,” they said.

The family added that his memory continues to encourage those he left behind to live purposefully, serve others and uphold the values he cherished.

They concluded the tribute with a message of love and remembrance, saying: “We miss you always, Daddy. We love you. We honour you. We remember you. Your work continues. Your values endure. Your legacy lives on.”
