Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian youths to connect the success of European football with the need for better governance in Nigeria.

Obi made the call in a message to Nigerian youths as European football leagues resume action this weekend.

He said Nigeria has no shortage of football talent, noting that many Nigerian players have succeeded in Europe because they operate in systems that provide infrastructure, security, proper management and opportunities.

According to him, the same principles can be applied to develop Nigeria’s football and other sectors of the economy.

Obi said Nigeria could build a competitive domestic league with well-managed clubs, better stadiums, improved coaching and stronger private-sector investment.

He argued that good governance was necessary to create an environment where young Nigerians could develop their talents without having to leave the country in search of opportunities.

The former governor also linked the issue to the 2027 general election, urging young Nigerians to take an active interest in the electoral process.

He said the election would provide an opportunity for Nigerians to choose the kind of country they want to build.

Obi encouraged youths to enjoy European football but also use the success of the leagues as a reminder that effective systems and responsible leadership can produce better results.

He said the country’s challenges go beyond sports and include jobs, security, education, infrastructure and economic opportunities.

“Stand up. Mobilise. Vote. Defend your vote,” Obi said. He added that he would continue engaging Nigerian youths in the coming months on the need for good governance and national development.

Obi expressed optimism that a better Nigeria could be built if citizens actively participated in shaping the country’s future.
