A fire outbreak has engulfed part of Calabar Mall in Cross River State, with several businesses reportedly affected as firefighters battle to contain the blaze.
The affected section of the mall reportedly houses a pharmacy, clothing store, perfumery and phone shop, with shop owners said to be watching helplessly as their properties are consumed by the fire.
Only one fire service truck was reportedly at the scene battling the inferno, while the mall’s fire hydrant system was said to have been overwhelmed.
Security personnel were also reportedly trying to control crowds around the scene, amid concerns that some individuals were attempting to loot from the affected shops.
The extent of the damage and the cause of the fire remain unclear as emergency responders continue efforts to bring the situation under control.
