Beyond Zero: How James Adeyemo builds safer industrial workplaces

In heavy construction and oil-and-gas work, safety performance is often reduced to a simple number: zero.

Zero fatalities. Zero lost-time injuries. Zero recordable incidents. The more meaningful question is what systems produced that result and whether those systems can be sustained under the pressures of complex industrial work. That question provides a useful way to examine the career of Nigerian health, safety and environment specialist James Oluyemi Adeyemo, whose professional record spans more than two decades across construction, petroleum, offshore operations, refinery shutdowns and commissioning projects in Nigeria, Qatar and the United Kingdom.

Adeyemo’s records report TRIR of 0.0, DART of 0.0 and zero lost-time injuries during multiple years, including 2013 through 2017, 2019 and 2022. They also attribute to safety systems implemented under his leadership a 98 percent reduction in accidents and incidents, a 46 percent reduction in work-related risks, approximately 30 percent faster incident investigations, and about 95 percent compliance with lockout/tagout procedures during client audits.

Those figures are significant, but their value lies in the systems behind them.

From Petroleum Safety to Major Industrial Projects

Adeyemo’s career in industrial safety can be traced to his work as a Senior Safety Officer with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation between 2004 and 2008. He supported petroleum projects in Lagos and Port Harcourt, including expansion of fire lines at the Ejigbo Plant and replacement of flare-leakage systems involving onshore and offshore activities. His responsibilities included risk assessment, emergency planning, site inspections, permit-to-work controls, job-safety analysis and incident investigation.

He later moved to Qatar, where he served as an HSE Lead with Danem Group Company on offshore and industrial projects involving topside-jacket fabrication, damaged gas-pipeline repair and pipeline installation. From 2014 to 2023, Adeyemo served as Health, Safety and Environment Manager for Medgulf Construction Company in Doha, overseeing HSE functions across EPC, refinery, shutdown, construction and commissioning projects associated with Qatargas and other industrial facilities.

His project portfolio included CO2 export facilities, pipelines, storage systems, refinery modifications, fire-water systems, transformers, LNG-berth works and safety-protection-device projects.

Managing Risk During Shutdowns

Shutdown projects present a particular challenge because numerous high-risk activities must be completed within compressed schedules. Workers, contractors and project teams may be carrying out simultaneous lifting, isolation, testing, commissioning and maintenance activities around operating or recently isolated process equipment.

Adeyemo’s responsibilities included reviewing subcontractor HSE plans and risk assessments, implementing permit-to-work and lockout/tagout procedures, coordinating training, investigating incidents and advising management on corrective measures and safety-performance targets. His professional record states that these systems supported zero-LTI performance during multiple project periods.

Recognition From Qatargas

Adeyemo’s work also received direct client recognition. He contributed to the safe completion of the 70-inch and 30-inch underground seawater pipeline replacement project during the QG3 Shutdown Project, identified in his professional record as the first project of its type undertaken in Qatar.

Qatargas Project Management Department subsequently issued him a Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding contribution toward the safe completion of the project.

He received another Qatargas recognition for his contribution to the safe completion of three combined projects during the Laffan Refinery Shutdown in November 2019.

These recognitions are important because they provide external acknowledgment of his role beyond internally reported safety statistics.

Turning Incident Data into Prevention

One of Adeyemo’s documented improvements involved incident investigation. His career record reports an approximately 30 percent reduction in investigation time following implementation of an incident-analysis system. The significance is not simply speed. Effective incident investigation allows organizations to identify causes, communicate lessons and implement corrective actions before similar conditions produce another event.

This emphasis on learning from data also appears in Adeyemo’s later technical work, where he advocates the use of incident trends, key performance indicators, audits and continuous-improvement systems to strengthen HSE performance.

Lockout/Tagout Compliance

Another measurable result concerns hazardous-energy control. Adeyemo’s records report approximately 95 percent compliance with lockout/tagout procedures for electrical and mechanical testing and commissioning activities during client audits.

Lockout/tagout is designed to prevent equipment from unexpectedly energizing while maintenance, testing or commissioning work is underway. In industrial environments, failure can expose workers to electrical, mechanical or stored-energy hazards. Adeyemo’s responsibilities included implementing these controls and integrating them into broader permit-to-work and risk-management systems.

Research Connected to Practice

Adeyemo has also published technical work on construction safety. His 2024 research examined the integration of HSE management systems, including ISO 45001, leadership commitment, employee participation, auditing and continuous improvement.

Another study focused on risk-based hazard management, while a separate publication examined the use of wearable devices, drones and smart sensors for construction safety.

These subjects closely reflect the problems he has managed throughout his career: hazard identification, contractor control, isolation, incident analysis and early detection of risk.

The technologies themselves are not his inventions. Their relevance lies in how he applies established safety principles to increasingly data-driven construction environments.

Continuing the Work

Adeyemo returned to Nigeria as Senior HSE Manager with Dexterity Construction Service Limited from 2023 to 2025, supporting major construction and energy-related projects including the Twin Towers development and the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben gas pipeline/LNG-related works.

His responsibilities included project-specific HSE systems, audits, subcontractor compliance, gap analysis and technical recommendations to senior management.

Since July 2025, his professional record places him in the United Kingdom as a Health and Safety Consultant supporting civil-engineering and infrastructure projects. Across these roles, the consistent theme is not simply compliance. It is the development of systems intended to identify hazards early, control high-risk work and use measurable performance data to improve safety outcomes.

That may be the more meaningful measure of Adeyemo’s contribution: not the absence of incidents alone, but the systems designed to make that absence more likely.
