The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Dr. Gbemileke Alagbe, popularly known as Eleniyan, and the party’s candidate for Ibadan North-East Constituency 2 in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Princess Oluwaseun Dosunmu, have visited traders affected by the recent fire incident at Oranyan, Ibadan, promising support to help them rebuild their businesses.
The visit, which took place on Tuesday, was aimed at sympathising with the victims, assessing the extent of the destruction and identifying ways of supporting traders whose shops and goods were destroyed in the inferno.
Alagbe and Dosunmu were accompanied by the ADC Chairman for Ibadan South-West, Idris Adeshola, and other party members and stakeholders.
The delegation inspected the affected shops and interacted with traders, who narrated their experiences and the losses suffered as a result of the fire.
One of the affected traders, Mr. Aderemi Ayuba, alleged that the incident occurred after suspected thieves broke into some of the shops and allegedly stole valuables before the shops were set ablaze.
Ayuba claimed that items allegedly stolen included plasma televisions, generators, home theatre speakers, gold, clothes, wardrobes, furniture and other valuable goods.
He said the incident had left many traders devastated, with some losing their businesses and major sources of livelihood.
Responding to the situation, Alagbe expressed sympathy with the affected traders and acknowledged the severity of the losses suffered.
He assured the victims that the ADC would support their efforts to rebuild and return to business.
The governorship candidate promised to provide planks and roofing materials to assist traders in reconstructing their damaged shops.
He also prayed for the victims, asking God to give them the strength and resources to overcome the setback and recover from their losses.
The Iyaloja and Babaloja of the market also appealed for assistance on behalf of the affected traders, saying many victims had lost their means of livelihood.
