An embedded power developer, Elektron Energy, has opened its 40-megawatt Victoria Island Power (VIPL) project to individual customers and businesses as it moves towards commissioning a dedicated electricity supply network in one of Lagos’ major commercial districts.

The company hosted a Customer Experience Day in Victoria Island, Lagos, yesterday, giving prospective customers and business leaders access to the project site and technical briefings on the 40MW power plant, including the Wärtsilä engine technology deployed at the facility.

The engagement also provided attendees an opportunity to interact with the engineering team on the progress of the project ahead of commissioning.

Developed in collaboration with Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and under a licence from the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), VIPL combines power generation and distribution infrastructure to supply dedicated electricity to businesses across Victoria Island.

The project, backed by institutional capital from ARM-Harith Infrastructure Fund, Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), InfraCredit and the Bank of Industry (BOI), underscores the growing role of private investment in developing electricity infrastructure for commercial centres.

The 40MW embedded network is designed to provide an alternative to self-generation by supplying locally-generated electricity through a professionally-managed distribution network.

The project is expected to reduce businesses’ reliance on diesel generators while providing greater predictability in electricity supply and energy costs.

Executive Director, Business Development, Elektron Energy, Ayomide Oladapo, said the project was designed to address the reliability and cost challenges businesses in Victoria Island face in meeting their electricity needs.

He stressed that Victoria Island Power changes that equation by delivering clean, dedicated, professionally managed electricity infrastructure.

He added that the Victoria Island project reflects its strategy of bringing generation closer to areas where businesses require more dependable electricity, with businesses in the district able to register interest in joining the network.
