The Southeast chapter of the Renewed Hope for Greater Nigeria (RHGN), a group supporting President Bola Tinubu, plans to approach prominent Igbo leaders to persuade former Anambra State governor Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and support Tinubu.

The group said it would seek the intervention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo President Senator John Azuta Mbata, former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku and Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe.
RHGN Southeast leader Mazi Franklin Ngoforo disclosed this in Owerri on Saturday after a meeting on strategies to secure support for Tinubu across the five Southeast states in the 2027 election.

Ngoforo said the proposed meeting with the Igbo leaders would be aimed at encouraging Obi to consider the long-term political interests of the Southeast rather than focusing solely on the 2027 presidential contest.

He argued that an alliance between the Southeast and Southwest could create a broader political arrangement that would strengthen the region’s chances of producing a future president.
“The issue is bigger than one election and bigger than one individual,” Ngoforo said.

He said Tinubu, if re-elected, would be constitutionally limited to one more term, arguing that the Southeast could support the Southwest in 2027 while negotiating a political arrangement that could benefit the region when power changes hands in the future.

Ngoforo said withdrawing from the 2027 race should not necessarily be viewed as the end of Obi’s presidential ambition, but as a strategic decision that could improve the Southeast’s prospects of producing a president at a later date.

He said the group would present its proposal to the Igbo leaders and ask them to lead a delegation to Obi.

The development comes as political parties and support groups intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with Tinubu, Obi and other major political figures expected to play prominent roles in the emerging contest.
