The University of Ibadan (UI) has approved the appointment of former Vice-Chancellor of the institution and Nigerian Ambassador to Canada, Prof. Isaac Adewole; two former Deputy Vice-Chancellors and 14 other distinguished academics as Emeritus Professors.

The former DVCs appointed are Prof. Emilolorun Ambrose Aiyelari and Prof. Ezekiel Olusola Ayoola.

The appointments, approved by the Senate of the university, recognise the scholars’ contributions to teaching, research, scholarship, administration and the development of the institution.

Adewole, a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, served as Vice-Chancellor of the university between 2020 and 2015 before becoming Minister of Health by the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was subsequently appointed Nigeria’s Ambassador to Canada by President Bola Tinubu.

Aiyelari is a Professor in the Department of Soil Resources Management, while Ayoola is a Professor of Mathematics.

Others appointed as Emeritus Professors include Prof. Adenike Emeke of the Institute of Education; Prof. Rotimi. A. Oderinde of the Department of Chemistry; Prof. Alexander B. Odaibo of the Department of Zoology; and Prof. M. A. O. Ayeni of the Department of Geography.

Also on the list are Prof. Helen Osinowo of the Department of Psychology; Prof. S. Babatunde Agbola of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning; Prof. Stephen O. Akpavie of the Department of Veterinary Pathology; and Prof. Augustine. E. Falaye of the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management.

The university also approved the appointment of Prof. Kolawole T. Jaiyeoba of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Industrial Pharmacy; Prof. Oladimeji Oladepo of the Department of Health Promotion and Education; Prof. Matthew T. Shokunbi of the Department of Anatomy; Prof. Olayemi O. Omotade of the Institute of Child Health; Prof. Adegoke G. Falade of the Department of Paediatrics; and Prof. Michael C. Asuzu of the Department of Community Medicine.

The conferment of Emeritus Professorship is one of the university’s highest forms of recognition for distinguished academics, acknowledging their scholarly contributions and continued association with the institution.
