Persons with disabilities (PWD) in Abia State have inaugurated a support group for the re-election of Governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party in the 2027 election.
The group said its formation was aimed at mobilising persons with disabilities and their families across the state to support Otti’s bid for a second term.

It attributed its decision to what it described as the governor’s “remarkable interventions and inclusive policies” that have positively affected the lives of persons with disabilities in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration held at the group’s office on Macaulay Street, Umuahia, the state patron and board member of the Abia State Disability Commission, Stanley Onyebuchi, said Otti had demonstrated a commitment to the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Onyebuchi particularly commended the governor for establishing the Abia State Disability Commission and appointing five persons with disabilities to serve on the commission.
He said the appointments had given persons with disabilities greater participation and ownership in decisions affecting their welfare.

“Stating that it is going to be persons with disabilities and others that will manage the commission demonstrates the governor’s commitment to inclusion and the welfare of our people,” he said.
Onyebuchi also praised the administration’s support for athletes with disabilities, saying they had participated in sporting events in more than nine countries since the government assumed office.

He said the administration had sponsored major sporting championships hosted in the state, including the National Badminton Championship, as well as continental and international competitions.
He added that persons with disabilities had also benefited from the provision of assistive devices.

Onyebuchi said the interventions motivated members of the disability community to establish the support group and mobilise their members and families for Otti’s re-election.
“We came together and said we are going to form this group so that we can mobilise our brothers and sisters with disabilities and even our family members to support the re-election of His Excellency,” he said.

The state coordinator of the group, Elder Eze Orasi, reaffirmed its commitment to building a strong grassroots structure across the state ahead of the 2027 election.
Orasi said the group would establish structures across the state’s wards and local government areas to mobilise persons with disabilities for the governor’s re-election.

Several members were inaugurated into leadership positions during the meeting.
