We Gave Up Romance for Friendship’ Odegbami Opens Up on Oyin Adeyemi

FOR years, the nature of the relationship between Nigerian football legend and astute businesswoman Oyin Adeyemi remained a favourite puzzle for society insiders. Whispers of romance, secret introductions, and a shared child floated through elite circles without a definitive answer.

The football icon popularly known as ‘Mathematical’ is finally setting the record straight. In an exclusive, no-holds-barred conversation, he pulls back the curtain on what truly transpired between them—revealing why they almost walked down the aisle, the reality of their split, and why their deep bond has survived the test of time.

Airtel Tenancy

When their path first crossed, Oyin’s total detachment from former football star’s legendary status was part of her magnetic pull. “She was very young and very innocent,” he recalls. “She did not even know that I was famous, or anything like that. Because of my outdoor lifestyle and because she was really a very private person, it took a long time for her to realise the implications of a serious relationship with me and to run away.”
Despite her initial hesitation, the connection deepened. She wasn’t just another face in the crowd; her intellect completely disarmed him. “She was—and still is—a very beautiful woman. Most men will salivate on seeing her.

“At the same time, she is very intelligent and very smart. Don’t listen to her talk on any subject because you will be enamored with the depth of her knowledge and intellect. She blew my mind the first time I met her,” Odegbami shares.

The romance grew so serious that family introduction ceremony—a traditional milestone that typically serves as the final gateway to marriage—was held. But life, ambition, and stark differences in temperament intervened.
The arrival of their son served as a defining turning point. Recognising Oyin’s sharp ambition and formidable drive in a corporate world dominated by men, Odegbami realised that a traditional marriage might have clipped her wings.
“You know, she is a sure-footed person, strong-willed and very focused. She knew what she wanted in life and went after it. I was a distraction for her, away from where she was heading,” he admits candidly. “That’s why she is such a very successful woman succeeding so well in a man’s world. She has always been a deep thinker and scholar.”

Add a significant age gap—which she still playfully teases him about—and the duo quietly realised that romance was writing cheques their compatibility couldn’t cash. Well over a decade ago, they mutually decided to pull the plug on the romantic chapter to save what mattered most.

Despite coming close to tying the knot, Odegbami insists there are zero regrets about how things played out. “We are not married. We will not be married. We settled that matter over a decade ago,” he states firmly.
“We just ended the romantic relationship a long time ago. It was as if we both knew that we had to give up the romance for the friendship to survive, with a son we both love deeply in between.”

Asked if losing the relationship was painful, his response is instantaneous: “Painful? We are still very good friends.”

Painting a picture of the woman behind the corporate powerhouse, Odegbami describes Oyin as a devoted mother wrapped in strength. “She is steely on the outside, but soft and tender inside. A great mother to our son,” he enthused.

If he’s given just 60 seconds to speak to Oyin away from the public eye, the sports icon’s message is remarkably simple and deeply appreciative: “Thank you for everything you have been to me, and done for me.”
As for the question of who occupies the legend’s heart romantically today, the football icon offered perhaps his clearest answer yet: “No one romantically, my children!” he declares with a smile.
