The Lagos State University has commenced disciplinary processes following the alleged assault of one of its students by a parent at a private hostel in Ikeja.

The incident, which was captured in a viral video, involved students of the university’s College of Medicine, although LASU said it occurred outside its campus premises.

The video showed a woman repeatedly beating a younger woman while other people at the scene appealed to her to stop.

While the circumstances surrounding the confrontation were not immediately clear, a caption accompanying the video alleged that the woman had visited the hostel to confront her daughter’s roommate.

In a statement issued on Friday, the university said the assaulted student had reported the matter to the police and that it had been addressed through the appropriate law enforcement authorities.

LASU’s Deputy Registrar and Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, said the institution had also initiated disciplinary action in line with its rules and regulations.

The university condemned the incident, describing violence, intimidation and harassment against students, staff or visitors as unacceptable.

“Any form of assault, intimidation, or harassment of students, staff, or visitors, whether within or outside the University premises, is unacceptable and goes against the core values upon which this institution was founded,” the statement said.

LASU urged its students to conduct themselves responsibly and report issues that could threaten their safety to the appropriate authorities.

The institution also appealed to parents to engage constructively with the university and encourage their children and wards to uphold discipline and integrity.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, safety and academic success of its students.
