The United States Mission Nigeria on Monday confirmed the closure of the US Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos in observance of the 2026 Labour Day holiday in the United States.

The diplomatic missions remained closed to the public on Monday, September 7, 2026, with routine consular services, including visa processing, unavailable for the day.

The closure formed part of the schedule of public holidays observed by the US diplomatic missions in Nigeria for the remainder of 2026, covering both American and Nigerian holidays.

The United States Labour Day is observed annually on the first Monday of September to honour the contributions and achievements of American workers.

It will be recalled that the US Embassy had earlier announced that routine visa services would be processed through the Consulate General in Lagos with effect from August 1, 2026.

The Monday closure means applicants and members of the public requiring routine consular services will have to wait until the resumption of normal operations.
