Edo Queens have received a N50 million financial reward from the Edo State Government following their impressive double triumph in Nigerian and West African women’s football.

Governor Monday OkpebholoGovernor Monday Okpebholo announced the reward on Tuesday while receiving the team at the Government House in Benin City, where the players and officials presented the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League and 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League trophies.

The Edo-based side secured the WAFU-B title after a dramatic final against Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies. The encounter ended 2-2 after regulation time before Edo Queens held their nerve to win 4-1 on penalties.

The victory also secured Edo Queens a place in the 2026/27 CAF Women’s Champions League, adding a continental qualification to their growing list of achievements.

Okpebholo praised the players for their resilience and determination, particularly their ability to recover from difficult moments during the final. He also commended the goalkeeper for her performance during the decisive penalty shootout and acknowledged the contributions of the coaching and technical crew.

The governor said the team’s success was significant not only for Edo State but also for Nigerian football, before announcing the N50 million reward as recognition of their achievement.

The WAFU-B triumph comes after Edo Queens had already emerged champions of the 2026 Nigeria Women’s Football League, making the season particularly successful for the club.

The latest recognition further highlights the growing profile of women’s football in Edo State, with the team now set to represent the WAFU-B region on the continental stage.
