Lagos urges communities to protect public infrastructure corridor

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government has urged residents, community leaders, transport operators, traders, and public and private institutions in the Agric–Egan–Igando axis to protect the right-of-way designated for public infrastructure and curb illegal activities within the corridor.

The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, made the call at a stakeholders’ engagement convened by the Ministry of Housing to address illegal occupation of the right-of-way reserved for 33kV electricity transmission lines in Agric, Egan and Igando.

The meeting focused on indiscriminate street trading, obstruction of walkways and road corridors, unauthorised parking, illegal operations of commercial motorcycles and tricycles, waste management, traffic congestion, security concerns and the poor condition of parts of Agric Road.

Represented by the Director of the Ministry’s Legal Unit, Mrs Bukade Idowu-Koya, the commissioner said the sustainability of public infrastructure required the active participation and collective responsibility of the government and the communities it served.

Akinderu-Fatai reiterated the government’s commitment to providing critical infrastructure, but said residents also had a responsibility to protect and preserve public investments.

Stakeholders at the meeting called for greater protection of existing and proposed infrastructure and the safe implementation of ongoing development projects in the corridor.

The commissioner also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, public safety and improved living conditions in the area.

He noted that the successful implementation of the proposed 33kV power line, which is expected to serve communities in the corridor, including the ongoing Egan-Igando mixed housing scheme, would depend largely on the cooperation of affected residents.
