Four Nigerian students have recorded notable achievements in international mathematics competitions, including medals at the Pan-African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO), participation in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), and scholarships to study mathematical sciences abroad.

The students: Oghenerukwe Esemitodje, Oyerinde Damaris Oluwasemilore, Sampson Abasiofon Otobong and Chimfumnanya Aghaduno, developed through Nigeria’s mathematical Olympiad pathway, with their journeys linked to the Special Maths Contest and subsequent training at Special Maths Academy.

Oghenerukwe, a student of Nigerian Tulip International College, Lagos, won a gold medal at PAMO in 2022 and later emerged as the winner of the 2024/2025 Special Maths Contest.

He has since secured admission to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is expected to continue his academic studies.

Oyerinde, of The Ambassadors College, emerged as the Overall Best Nigerian Girl in the 2024/2025 Special Maths Contest.

She was subsequently selected among five Nigerian girls for training for the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad and represented Nigeria at EGMO 2026 in France.

At PAMO 2026, she won a silver medal.

Sampson Abasiofon Otobong, a student of Nigerian Tulip International College, Abuja, was also selected for EGMO training before competing for a fully funded scholarship to the African Olympiad Academy (AOA) in Rwanda.

She secured the scholarship and is currently studying at the academy.

Chimfumnanya Aghaduno’s progress came after an earlier unsuccessful attempt at the Special Maths Contest in 2023.

She returned to the competition in 2024, progressed to the final round in Abuja in February 2025 and was later selected for EGMO training.

Her subsequent performance earned her a place representing Nigeria at PAMO 2026, where she won a silver medal.

The four students’ achievements come as the Special Maths Contest opens its 2026/2027 edition to students across the country.

The contest, organised by Special Maths Academy, is described by the organisation as a free talent-identification platform for students interested in mathematical problem-solving.

The academy said its subsequent training programme is designed to prepare selected students for national and international mathematical competitions.
