The Deputy Governor of Lagos State and APC governorship candidate, Dr KadiriObafemi Hamzat, has stated that the major reason Nigeria is not attaining its aspirations as a nation is because its people are not united.

He spoke at the Special Jumat service and prayers held in commemoration of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebration, held at Lagos Secretariat Community Central mosque, on Friday.

Hamzat spoke on why Nigeria is where it is today, saying, “we are not united, we don’t like each other, and as such, we don’t have coincidence of wants.” He also said that one of Nigeria’s problems is that it is expanding without taking responsibility.

“Our challenge is lack of unity as a people.We often see ourselves differently, and that creates division rather than shared purpose. But if we are united, come together and work as one, we already have the talent, the ability, and the resources to move this country forward. Unity is therefore very important, and I believe it is one of our major challenges,” said Hamzat.

Speaking on how the government and citizens can work together to build a better nation, he said it is not just government’s responsibility, but a shared responsibility between religious institutions, traditional institutions, the private sector, and citizens.

“We have seen it happen before, like during COVID-19, when everyone came together. The private sector contributed, and people supported one another. We need to sustain that spirit beyond emergencies and make it part of our everyday national life. That is what Lagos State has been advocating and what we hope will spread across the country,” he said. The Deputy Governor admonished Nigerians to unite.
