The Borno State caucus of the Nigerian Youths Parliament (NYOP), in collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), has commenced stakeholder consultations toward developing the 2027-2031 Borno State Media Action Plan (BOMAP).

The media initiative plan was discussed at a Media Stakeholders’ Technical Alignment meeting held on Monday in Maiduguri, where dozens of participants examined practical approaches to strengthening media and information literacy across the state.

Hajiya Fatima Lamisula, who presented the framework for the meeting, said: “The breakdown sessions were designed to translate stakeholders’ experiences, evidence and proposed solutions into practical components of the five-year Media Action Plan.

Fatima said the sessions would focus on identifying problems, their consequences and existing gaps, before developing solutions, priority actions, responsible actors, timelines and measurable indicators.

According to her, the framework is built around five thematic areas, including misinformation, disinformation and rumour management; peacebuilding, hate speech and extremist propaganda; and digital and media literacy for youths and communities.

Other areas of plan comprise responsible journalism, public information and strategic government communication, as well as community participation, civic information and sustainable media literacy systems.

She said the process would bring together representatives of government, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), civil society organisations, academics and the concerned citizens.

She also explained that the stakeholder categories would provide perspectives on public policies, professional journalism, community needs, research, accountability, citizen participation and effective communication.Browse Digital Magazines

Abdulkareem Haruna, Chairman, NUJ Borno Council, commended the Nigerian Youth Parliament for initiating the process.

Haruna, therefore assured the organisers of the union’s cooperation and support toward the successful development and implementation of the proposed action plan.

Similarly, Alhaji Ali Yaumi, representative of ALGON, expressed the association’s commitment to supporting the initiative.

He said the collaboration would contribute to the development of young people, the state and citizens, while promoting effective access to credible information and sustainable community development.Join Diaspora Networks

Participants are expected to contribute recommendations that would guide the formulation of the Borno State Media Action Plan for implementation between 2027 and 2031.
