The University of Calabar (UNICAL), Cross River State, has raised the alarm over an impostor allegedly posing as a professor and attempting to defraud students by promising to influence their examination results.

The university management, in a statement issued by its Public Relations Unit, said the suspect, who identifies himself as “Prof. Odong” and claims to be a staff member of the university’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) unit, has been contacting students over alleged poor examination results.

According to the statement, the individual, using telephone number 08144115929, allegedly demands money from students, claiming that payment would enable him to assist them in improving their results.

Preliminary findings by the university’s Security Department, however, established that no staff member known as Prof. Odong is currently associated with the institution.

Further checks, the university said, indicated that the individual was operating from Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Management therefore warned students and members of the university community against responding to calls, text messages or other communications from the alleged impostor, particularly requests for money in connection with examination results or other academic matters.

The university also advised students not to disclose personal information or examination details to anyone claiming to have the ability to alter, improve or facilitate their results.

It said the university management had zero tolerance for unethical practices and would sanction anyone found culpable of such activities.

Management urged any student who had been contacted by the individual to report the matter promptly to the appropriate university authorities for necessary action.

The university reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students and safeguarding the integrity of its academic processes.
