NCoS operationalises Ibadan maximum security custodial centre, admits 80 inmates

Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS)

THE Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has officially commenced operations at the newly constructed Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Olojuoro-Olomi, Ibadan, Oyo State, with the initial admission of 80 convicted male inmates.

The operationalisation of the facility followed the approval of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and a directive from the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche to transfer selected inmates from designated centres pending the facility’s formal commissioning.

According to a press statement by the Service Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji, the development is a significant step in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to expand infrastructure and address prison congestion.

He noted that the current capacity of the new facility is 800 inmates, with strategic plans to expand it to accommodate 3,000 inmates upon full completion. The targeted expansion will eventually include specialised cells for awaiting-trial persons, female inmates, and those on death row.

“The commencement of operations marks a significant addition to the custodial infrastructure of the Nigerian Correctional Service and represents another important step in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to expand custodial capacity, address congestion and provide a safer, more secure and humane environment,” Osuji stated.

The new centre boasts modern critical infrastructure, including adequate cells and beddings, a modern gate lodge, perimeter fencing, a modern kitchen, medical facilities, and staff accommodation to support effective correctional management.

Osuji explained that the strategically located South-West facility is expected to ease pressure on existing custodial centres, particularly in neighbouring Ogun, Osun, and Ekiti states.

She emphasised that the provision of modern infrastructure aligns seamlessly with a broader reform agenda to ensure inmates are treated humanely and provided with appropriate opportunities for eventual reintegration into society. We

“The operationalisation of the Olojuoro-Olomi Maximum Security Custodial Centre therefore represents a significant investment in Nigeria’s correctional infrastructure and a further demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening public safety,” the statement adds.
