Winter sun from the US West Coast means one of two things: you commit in October and lock a price, or you hold the dates loose and pay whatever January asks. We priced both approaches on the Honolulu run in the first week of October 2026, using nonstop Alaska and Hawaiian departures out of SEA and SFO for travel between January 10 and February 20, and the spread was wider than the desk expected.

What locking in early actually bought

Booking in early October for a mid-January departure, the cheapest nonstop round trip we found from SEA was $448 on Alaska, and $486 from SFO on Hawaiian. Add a checked bag at $35 each way on the Alaska fare and you are at $518 before you have left the driveway. The same itinerary priced in the first week of December, for the same January dates, sat at $690 to $840, which is a 40 to 70 percent jump for identical seats on identical aircraft.

That gap is the whole argument for early commitment on holiday dates. Between December 18 and January 4 the premium is worse, because every seat is contested and the resort side moves in step: a Waikiki beachfront room quoted at $340 a night in October was $610 a night by mid-December for the same week, and the cancellation terms had tightened from 48 hours to 14 days.

But early has a cost that never shows up in the fare. Change fees on a mainstream US carrier main cabin ticket run $0 to $200 depending on the fare family, and basic economy, which is where most of those cheap October numbers live, cannot be changed at all. A $448 seat that cannot move is worth less than a $560 seat that can.

Some routes reward patience instead. If your winter escape is Hawaii rather than Mexico or the Caribbean, hawaii low cost flights tend to thin out fast once the December peak passes, and the last week of January is consistently softer than the first.

Where flexibility wins

Holding the dates open works when three conditions line up, and they do not all line up often.

EFN Non Oil Export
  • Your travel window is at least ten days wide
  • You are not travelling over Christmas, New Year or Presidents’ Week
  • You can absorb a $150 to $250 swing without the trip falling apart

Under those conditions, waiting until 14 to 21 days out is defensible. We tracked LAX to Kahului for a February 3 departure: $512 at 60 days out, $468 at 21 days, $395 at nine days. That last number is real, but it is also a gamble, and the same route on February 12 went the other way, from $540 to $720 inside a fortnight.

The alternative worth naming honestly is not another airline. It is not going far at all. Four nights in Palm Springs in January, flights from SEA at roughly $180 return plus a $240 a night resort, beats a week in Waikiki on total cost by a margin that no fare alert will close. If the requirement is genuinely “warm and faraway,” flying wins, because nothing else gets you to 27°C water in six hours. If the requirement is only “warm,” it does not, and the drive is the smarter purchase.

The variable that decides it

What separates the two approaches is not how far ahead you book, it is whether your dates are fixed by school terms or a work calendar. Fixed dates and a holiday week mean book in September or October and accept the change fee as insurance you probably will not use. Floating dates outside the peak weeks mean the fare finder is your friend for another six or seven weeks, and the money you save buys the room upgrade.
