The Premier League returned from the longest-ever international break with goals, comebacks and late drama across six match venues on Saturday.
The day’s action started at the home ground of the reigning champions. The Gunners dug deep to produce a comeback win over Leeds United. Arsenal needed a response following their 3-0 loss at Brighton before the break, but the visitors made life difficult for them as James Justin put Leeds United ahead in the 55th minute.
However, Riccardo Calafiori levelled seven minutes later and substitute Bruno Guimaraes snatched the winner in the 70th minute. The result puts the champions level with Manchester City on points at the top and ends Leeds United’s unbeaten run in the league.
Chelsea were the most dominant side in the Premier League on Saturday as they thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge. Jordan Henderson and Joao Pedro bagged a brace while Morgan Rodgers also got on the scoresheet as the Blues chewed up the Cherries to satisfaction. Evanilson scored Bournemouth’s only goal as the Cherries sit 17th on three points while Chelsea climb to fifth with 10 points.
Aston Villa and Brentford played out an enthralling two-all draw at Villa Park as the Bees remain unbeaten in the league after six matches. The visitors struck first through Ukrainian midfielder Yehor Yarmoliuk in the 10th minute, but Nicolas Jackson equalized less than two minutes later. John McGinn thought he won the tie for Villa in the 77th minute. However, Kristoffer Ajer restored parity moments later to extend Aston Villa’s first home win of the season.
Ipswich Town made Portman Road come alive as the Tractor Boys came from a goal down to snatch a late dramatic win over Fulham. Ryan Sessegnon had earlier given the Cottagers the lead in the 55th minute, but Abdoul Ouattara equalised with a 30-yard stunner in 88 minutes, and Dara O’Shea scored in stoppage time to seal the win as Fulham remain winless.
Brighton continued their blistering form in the Premier League as the Seagulls outsmarted the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light with 10 men. Maxim De Cuyper scored the opener in 53 minutes, but Pascal Struijk made things difficult for his side as he got his marching orders four minutes after celebrating with De Cuyper. Fabian Hurzeler’s men held on until substitute Jaouen Hadjam added a second in stoppage time. The win is Brighton’s third in a row and Sunderland third straight loss.
Piss-poor Manchester United surrendered their lead late on the game to 10-men Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in the late kick-off of the day. Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the 73rd minute after a dreadful first-half display. The Red Devils got a further lifeline as Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off five minutes later. Nevertheless, Dominic Solanke got to the end of Sandro Tonali’s cross in stoppage time to snatch a point for the visitors.
