Operator decries delay in AKK pipeline completion

Private sector operators are demanding accountability over the repeated shifts in the delivery timelines of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) gas pipeline, as delay threatens Nigeria’s ambition to expand Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) adoption.

The Private Sector Alliance for Accelerated CNG Growth, through its convener, Charles Yakub, said the uncertainty surrounding the $2.8 billion, 614-kilometre pipeline could undermine investor confidence and slow the development of affordable gas-powered transportation and industrial activities.

The development comes as the current government is seeking to reduce transportation costs by leveraging CNG as an alternative and cheaper fuel.

Yakub, in a statement, demanded transparent completion deadlines, independent verification of construction progress and sustained commercial gas supply through the pipeline.

The construction of the AKK pipeline, designed to transport natural gas from Ajaokuta in Kogi State to Kano State, commenced in 2020 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The project forms part of Nigeria’s broader gas infrastructure development strategy to increase domestic gas consumption, support power generation and stimulate industrialisation.

Initially expected to be delivered within 24 months, the project has missed several completion targets, with its delivery now facing further uncertainty amid projections that full completion could extend into 2027.

Yakub questioned the repeated changes to the project’s timeline, asking the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).
