NIDO Chicago celebrates Nigeria at 66, committed to growth, development

NIDO Chicagoland

The Nigerians in Diaspora Organization (NIDO), USA – Chicagoland Chapter, has joined the government and people of Nigeria in marking the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary with a memorable evening celebrating Nigerian culture, unity, leadership, and the achievements of the diaspora.

Held last Saturday, the celebration brought together community leaders, professionals, families, former NIDO leaders and friends of Nigeria for an evening dedicated to honoring Nigeria’s heritage while looking towards a stronger and more united future.
The celebration was held under the theme, ‘Connecting for Growth, Building for the Future’, with the powerful tagline, ‘One Nigeria, One Community, One Future’.
The theme reflected NIDO Chicagoland’s commitment to creating meaningful connections, developing partnerships, empowering young Nigerians, and strengthening the community in the United States and Nigeria.

President of NIDO Chicagoland, Georgina Ayiwe Franklin, emphasized the importance of unity, collaboration, and youth engagement in building a stronger Nigerian community.
She highlighted the responsibility of Nigerians in the diaspora to use their skills, relationships, and resources to create opportunities and contribute positively to both Nigeria and their adopted communities.

“NIDO Chicagoland’s mission aligns with its broader objective of providing a unified platform through which Nigerians in the diaspora can harness their talents, expertise and resources for economic and social development.”
The Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, D.C. was represented by the Head of Technology, Health and Education, Hon. Chukudi Nwachukwu Igboeli, and the Head of Information and Culture, Mrs. Farida Muntari Kaita.

The representatives attended on behalf of Ambassador Kayode Are, who was unable to attend the celebration personally.
Their presence was warmly received by NIDO Chicagoland leadership and members of the Nigerian community and was viewed as an important demonstration of the Embassy’s continued engagement with Nigerians living in the United States.
In the remarks reflecting on the significance of the occasion, NIDO Chicagoland expressed appreciation to Ambassador Are for designating his representatives to participate in the celebration.

The organization noted that the theme, ‘Connecting for Growth, Building for the Future’, represents a shared responsibility among Nigerians in the diaspora to build meaningful connections, create partnerships, empower young people, support families and communities, and contribute to the development of Nigeria and the United States.
NIDO Chicagoland also expressed its desire to strengthen its relationship with the Nigerian Embassy and to work collaboratively on initiatives promoting unity, community engagement, economic opportunities, youth development and the well-being of Nigerians in Chicagoland and across the United States.

One of the major highlights of the evening was the inauguration of the NIDO Chicagoland Board of Trustees.
The new Board of Trustees comprises Mr Sam Aiwuyo, Chief Ovie Mukoro, Dr Sandra Dafiaghor, Dr George Nwogu, and Pastor Doyin Owobamirin.
The trustees include former presidents and distinguished leaders of NIDO Chicagoland, who have contributed significantly to the growth and development of the organization.
The inauguration was conducted by Hon. Chukudi Nwachukwu Igboeli, who represented Ambassador Kayode Are at the event, and it symbolized continuity, institutional experience, and a renewed commitment to providing strong leadership for the organization.
The new trustees are expected to bring their experience, knowledge, and community leadership to support NIDO Chicagoland’s ongoing programs and initiatives.
The celebration also reinforced NIDO Chicagoland’s broader vision of creating a united, vibrant, and impactful Nigerian community.
NIDO Chicagoland seeks to unite Nigerians throughout the Chicagoland area, promote cultural pride and community engagement, and strengthen connections among Nigerians in the diaspora.
Its mission is centered on fostering unity, collaboration, and mutual support, while promoting Nigeria’s rich culture, values and contributions to the communities where Nigerians live and work.

The organization’s vision is to build a community that connects, supports and empowers its members while contributing positively to the development of both Nigeria and the United States.
That vision is consistent with the wider NIDO Americas mission of promoting networking, cooperation and the mobilization of diaspora resources toward Nigeria’s social and economic development.
For NIDO Chicagoland, the Independence celebration was more than a commemoration of October 1, 1960. It was a reminder of the responsibility Nigerians in the diaspora have to preserve their heritage while creating a better future for the next generation.
The organization emphasized its commitment to serving as a strong bridge between Nigerians in the diaspora and the homeland, creating opportunities for collaboration among community organizations, professionals, businesses, government institutions, and young people.

As one of the established NIDO chapters serving the Nigerian community in the Illinois and Indiana region, NIDO Chicagoland provides a platform for Nigerian professionals and community organizations to connect and contribute to both Nigeria and the Chicagoland community.
The evening therefore became a celebration not only of Nigeria’s past, but also of the possibilities ahead.
From cultural preservation and youth development to professional networking, economic empowerment and community advocacy, NIDO Chicagoland is positioning itself to play an increasingly important role in connecting Nigerians and advancing opportunities across generations.

As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, the message from NIDO Chicagoland is clear – unity remains the foundation of progress.
The organization therefore called on Nigerians in Chicagoland to strengthen relationships, support one another, mentor the next generation, and build partnerships that create lasting economic and social impact.
